My final project for Women and Gender Studies - Liberation Act.

I made these posters as a way to challenge socially constructed ideals of body image and fat shame. As a “plus size” person, I have encountered fat shame through out the entirety of my life and have struggled with insecurities stemming from socially constructed yet self-perceived inadequacies regarding my body image. I am tired of feeling ashamed, assumed as being lazy, and glanced at with disgust - all because of my weight.

I am not inadequate because of my weight. I am not broken, or mutated, or wrong - society is.

“you don’t encourage someone to take care of their body by telling them to hate it”

I want to hang that over my mirror or something. And cc it to every person giving health advice who always start off with “here’s how you lose weight!” That’s not health advice, that’s weight loss advice. They are separate things. Conflating the two tells people that unless you LOOK a certain way you must be healthy and that you should only aspire to be healthy because pub hate how your body looks. Not because people actually wanna be healthy JUST TO BE HEALTHY.

My version of health requires mental health, which requires that I don’t engage in health practices from a place of hatred for myself. Geeze.
